About this ebook

This semi-autobiographical fiction, written by a hospice doctor, describes the uneasy balance between a health provider's personal and professional life. Using flashbacks, touching patient encounters and the sometimes sardonic notes Ava takes while reading a medical dictionary from cover to cover, the reader lives through one eventful year in the young doctor's life and watches as the delicate balance falls apart. Braided together with the doctor's story is that of a musician friend, Rosella, who has lost her brother. With the support of family, community, and friends, Ava is able to emerge on the other side of grief and eventually finds time in both a temporal and literal sense. This book is a good read for those working in care giving, health related or otherwise. And for those who know the heartache of grief.

A very interesting book, both for the story line and the liberal sprinkling of medical information. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it hard to put down.

About the author

Dr. Ann Colbert has practiced medicine in Eastern Kentucky for almost four decades. Originally from Michigan, she moved to Kentucky in 1985 to fulfill a National Health Service Corps commitment and stayed in the beautiful state. She worked as a family physician for many years and estimates she delivered five or six hundred babies. In 2002, she became board certified in hospice and palliative care and over the next fifteen years, assisted in the care of nearly as many patients at the end of their lives in this rural community at the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. She's also worked internationally as a volunteer clinician in Mexico, Zambia and Belize. Dr. Colbert has written and published several non-fiction articles about medicine. This is her first venture into fiction but she is working on the next novel for her series entitled "Doctors Reading Dictionaries".
