About the author

Anna Sewell was born in 1820 in Norfolk, England. It was driving her father to and from the station in a horse-drawn carriage that encouraged her to consider the humane treatment of horses, hoping that her writing would inspire people to treat them with kindness and understanding. She spent the last few years of her life - confined to her house as an invalid - writing Black Beauty.
