Four times a year, a witch is left bound in a clearing –

Served up as a sacrifice to honor the peace treaty.

But those offered up in tribute never return.

This story is not the first I have read by the author. I have read other hot and steamy reads by her and was excited about to get into the content of this one. From what the blurb said, it had all the makings of a nice, intense story. Well . . . it started out that way, though there was that typical trope that I could almost see what would happen next of the dutiful girl who sacrificed herself to save a family member from the big-bad. She hates everything about them and is dead set on finding a way home - no matter what. Sound familiar? Yeah, I think we have all read a few of these. Give a tweak here and there, new story but same old plot. I don't mind that necessarily. I think the author was doing good by humanizing the monsters (if that's possible). What drove the story into the ground for me was when the FMC was given an opportunity to see the reason for why she taken and the dire predicament the land was in, the FMC decided to run even though she knew what it would mean for

This was a little different style from Anya, in that it is a shifter/witch romance, with every other supernatural you could imagine. The storyline was interesting, and maybe a little predictable, but entertaining none the less. I love the fact that Ember is such a strong female in the story, and that Rowan is your typical alpha. Can't wait for Simon and Iris' story!. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I love it when an author steps outside their usual trope and explores something different so I was excited to see something different from Ms. Summers. Unlike the usual contemporary romance she usually writes, this is a PNR. I'm happy to say that she does just as fabulous of a job writing this trope as she does the other. The characters were fantastic, the fantasy elements were well written, and I loved the spice.

About the author

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Anya grew up listening to Cardinals baseball and reading anything she could get her hands on. She remembers her mother saying if only she would read the right type of books instead binging her way through the romance aisles at the bookstore, she’d have been a doctor. While Anya never did get that doctorate, she graduated cum laude from the University of Missouri-St. Louis with an M.A. in History.

Anya is a bestselling and award-winning author published in multiple fiction genres. She also writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and contemporary romance under the name Maggie Mae Gallagher. A total geek at her core, when she is not writing, she adores attending the latest comic con or spending time with her family. She currently lives in the Midwest with her two furry felines.
