Platons „Apologie des Sokrates“ oder „Verteidigung des Sokrates“ gehört zu den Meisterwerken der philosophischen Weltliteratur und ist in alle Kultursprachen übersetzt worden. Seit Matthias Claudius (1740–1815) und Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768–1834) ist sie immer wieder ins Deutsche übertragen worden und gehört zum Grundbestand humanistischer Bildung. Große Texte müssen immer wieder übersetzt werden, d.h. ihr Sinnpotential muss für jede Generation neu eingeholt werden. Das vorliegende Buch enthält eine solche neue Übersetzung. Ein knapper Kommentar bringt zum Verständnis unabdingbare Sacherklärungen, und im Nachwort werden Ergebnisse der neuen Forschung vorgestellt.
