This is the first book I have read by this author but it won't be the last. I really enjoyed this book. This is the story of Kelly and Dean. Kelly is a high school graduate who is counting the minutes until he moves to New Orleans with his best friend Nathan to begin college life. Fourth of July is coming up and each year Kelly and his family spend a week at the lake in their cottage. Kelly has been dreading it because each year his Mom invites a different girl who she is sure will make Kelly realize that being gay was just a phase! Like that happens everyday. Usually his best friend Nathan stays with Kelly to run interference and protect him from his mom. This year at the last minute, Nathan has to cancel. His car has broken down and in order to get it fixed so that they can go to college he has to work for his day everyday until they leave. Now wanting to leave his best friend in the lurch, he offers up his big brother Dean. Dean owes Nathan a favor and Nathan is cashing in. Kelly runs over to Dean's work to meet him as he leaves. He is embarrassed but desperate so he explains the situation to Dean. Dean knows that Kelly is his little brother's best friend but they don't really know each other very well. Kelly sells it as a week at the lake with minimal PDA. Thinking about Kelly's mom and how he is now on vacation with nothing to do, he agrees. This is their story. As they get to know each other, the relationship grows. It is a sweet love story. The quality of the story deserves 5 stars but due to the behavior of Kelly's mom I dropped it down to 4 stars. I found her behavior too over the top and it distracted from the story for me. If you have an open enough relationship with your son so that in his early teens he tells you he is gay; how could you do such a complete roll reversal as he is leaving for college? While a distraction, it didn't stop me from enjoying the story. Once I started to read it, I couldn't stop. I finished it in one sitting. Fake relationship comes real From the start, this story pulled me in. I smiled and laughed a lot. Kelly and Dean had great chemistry. Their banter was hilarious. The fake turning into real was really inevitable. Only thing that made this a 4 star instead of a 5 star for me is the ending. I felt it was rushed. It could have been explored a little more...but all in all this story was entertaining and a delight. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
