Used by the RAF in 1942, together all'Handley Page Halifax was the main strategic bomber of the RAF and other air forces of the Commonwealth countries. It was used primarily as a bomber night.

The Lancaster, an evolution of the troublesome Avro Manchester, was designed by Roy Chadwick and was powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin, or, in one version, Bristol Hercules engines.
