About this ebook

Manu is four days old. He is a labor robot whose sentient brain was restarted from factory default to work in the deployment of a new railroad line. Despite his short life, which started when he woke up at the construction site, Manu has already started to have visions of past lives, human lives. Soon he learns that these visions had a meaning, and why humans have to restore him to factory default periodically to keep him functional. As Manu starts building his first individual personality, he will start to realize that the path to building his new personality could be dangerous.

This story is a classic robot story for fans of Asimov’s robots but updated to the sensitivities and technical knowledge of our time. The depiction of the sentients labor robots is outstanding, and their awakening to full consciousness is excellent. I want to read more robot stories with this very human touch.

About the author

Baltar Xinzo is the pen name of a writer and engineer who has embraced the freedom of writing fiction to jog the emotional intelligence of his readers. Xinzo speculative fiction is characterized by a dark tone, often qualified as sci-fi noir, but, unlike other exponents of this style, his stories are permeated by a sense of hope and human sensibility. In his fiction writings, he explores existentialist issues in the backdrop of genres such as cyberpunk, hard science fiction, trans-humanism, and trans-realism.

You may have realized that Baltar Xinzo is the pen name of a real human being, not a mere AI. He lives in Ottawa, Canada, with his wife and two lovely cats that make him company during his creative sessions. When not writing fiction, he is a research scientist, among other things.
