Yet for as versatile and ubiquitous as this fruit is today, its history is a turbulent one, entangled in colonial domination, capitalist exploitation, sexual politics, and even horrific violence. Lorna Piatti-Farnell is director of the Popular Culture Research Centre at Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand. She is the author of Food and Culture in Contemporary American Fiction and Beef: A Global History, the latter also published by Reaktion Books.
