This has been one of my favorites since I picked it up in paperback in the 80's. I've re-read it a bunch of times and it always holds up. The mystery is good as Our Hero follows clues all over Rome to find his beloved, who was kidnapped right in front of him. Of course that leads to a bigger conspiracy. It also has a lot of great description of Rome at the time of Nero, though it's not like a textbook. It just naturally flows as we follow Marcus through the mean streets and fancy houses of Rome as he investigates. I'm sorry Hambly never wrote another book like this, but glad we have this one.
