Per una fortunata coincidenza Ernestine Kirsch, insegnante di latino in pensione e grande amante dell'operetta, ha due biglietti omaggio per la prima de La giacca gialla, di Franz Lehár, al Theater an der Wien. Decide così di invitare l'amico farmacista Anton Böck che, pur detestando l'operetta, accetta di accompagnarla per trascorrere una serata insieme a lei. Quando il giorno successivo Hermine Egger, "l'artista di maggior talento di tutti i teatri di Vienna, oltre che una donna molto attraente", viene trovata morta in seguito alla caduta in una buca del palcoscenico, Ernestine non crede all'ipotesi dell'incidente mortale, e inizia a fare domande a destra e a manca.
