Waar ter wereld Aafjes ook was, overal verzamelde hij de sprookjes, fabels en legenden van het land waar hij zich bevond. Uit zijn gigantische collectie sprookjesboeken (hij had zo’n drie boekenkasten vol) koos hij de verhalen die hem het meeste aanspraken. Het overduidelijke plezier dat hij bij het vertalen en bewerken had lees je onverminderd terug in de verhalen.
Aafjes zegt over Het hemd van een gelukkig mens in zijn voorwoord: ‘Dat hemd bestaat niet. Mocht iemand denken dat het wel bestaat, dan mag hij de verhalen van dit boek beschouwen als de flarden van dat hemd.’
