About this ebook

“A surprisingly maximalist portrait of a life.” —New York Times Book Review

The 52 micro-memoirs in genre-defying Heating & Cooling offer bright glimpses into a richly lived life, combining the compression of poetry with the truth-telling of nonfiction into one heartfelt, celebratory book. Alternatingly wistful and wry, ranging from childhood recollections to quirky cultural observations, these micro-memoirs build on one another to shape a life from unexpectedly illuminating moments.

Perfectly plotted and ranging from only one sentence to a maximum of a few pages, Beth Ann Fennelly’s collection of 52 “micro-memoirs” in Heating & Cooling is a wonderful example of how small packages can contain great delights. The bite-sized reflections are thought-provoking, touching and at times hilarious odes to marriage, family, motherhood and modern life. Fennelly skillfully encapsulates her relatable conundrums and experienced ironies in way that is realistic but not melancholy or bitter. This slim volume can be quickly consumed, but readers should take the time to fully digest each offering to fully appreciate Heating & Cooling’s poetic and memorable musings.
