About this ebook

Belle Palmer is finally free! Separated from her father on the harrowing escape, Belle is lost and alone until she finds shelter with the Bests, the first free family she’s ever known. For the first time in her sixteen years, Belle can speak her mind—except for her feelings for a certain dark-eyed young man—The Beau.
Educated and handsome, at eighteen, Daniel Best is engaged to the prettiest (if a little spoiled) girl around. So when the bedraggled girl his parents take under their wing suddenly turns into a vibrant, lovely young woman, his attraction to her is a complete—and complicated—surprise.
That the two belong together is undeniable, but caught between conscience and attraction, could it possibly happen?
“Beverly Jenkins has reached romance superstardom.”—Detroit Free Press
“Beverly Jenkins writes a captivating novel with the right combination of romance, history, action, and a dash of quick-witted humor. With well-sculpted characters and well-drawn setting, this is a perfect novel to interest teens into reading other romances.”—Romantic Times

This book was a great read, especially for a younger audience. Belle's character illuminates many of the overlooked realities of slavery. The skilled work and competency of slaves, the dangers and heartbreaks of the road to freedom, the prejudices and trials encountered by slaves turned free, and the roles played by abolitionists of different races, religions, and nationalities are just a few of the themes explored by Belle. Jenkins whets the appetite of her reader for more details about this oversimplified period of time. Through her historical accuracy, amazing story-telling skills, and vivid characters, she weaves a tale that leaves the reader eager to follow up on the bibliography she includes at the end, full of sources for the curious mind to explore the overlooked details of schoolbook history lessons. I would recommend this book as a gift to any adolescent who you may wish to turn into a mini-historian, because it's sure to awaken a thirst for more historical knowledge. Bravo, Miss Beverly!

Ms. Jenkins is my favorite author hands down & I've loved every single book of hers that I've read. Even though I am well older than Belle, I found myself getting smitten by the handsome Daniel Best right along with her. The historical aspects of the story are very educational. I always learn something new from Ms. Jenkins' writings and she makes her characters believable. Add Belle to your library & you won't be disappointed. I plan to read it to my future children when they come of age.

I know this story as "Belle and the Beau", which is my favorite book of all time...even now at 27. I remember first reading this book back in high school and falling in love with it. Since then, I've been searching for the book at libraries but couldn't find it. Now I've come across it again and had to purchase the ebook. I love the determination of the characters, the love shared, witty comments, tearful moments and historical facts. Cecilia and Belle are my favorite characters and the love between the Best parents and Belle and Daniel are absolute goals. Great book!!!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
