In the years after her death, Black Beauty would become the foundation for change in horse welfare in both England and the US. Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was the author of the classic novel, Black Beauty (1877), a heart-wrenching story told from the perspective of a horse. At the age of 14, Sewell fell and injured both ankles while walking home from school, an accident from which she never recovered.
