एक बार शरत की अन्य पुस्तकों के साथ उनकी चरित्रहीन की पांडुलिपि, जो लगभग पाँच सौ पृष्ठों की थी, जल गई। इससे हताश वे अवश्य ही बहुत हुए, परंतु निराश नहीं। अपने असाधारण परिश्रम से उसे पुनः लिखने से समर्थ हुए। प्रस्तुत रचना उनकी बड़ी लगन और साधना से निर्मित वही कलाकृति है।
शरतबाबू ने अपनी इस अमर कृति के संबंध में अपने काव्य-मर्मज्ञ मित्र प्रमथ बाबू को लिखा था, ‘‘केवल नाम और प्रारंभ को देखकर ही चरित्रहीन मत समझ बैठना। मैं नीतिशास्त्र का सच्चा विद्यार्थी हूँ। नीतिशास्त्र समझता हूँ। कुछ भी हो, राय देना, लेकिन राय देते समय मेरे गंभीर उद्देश्य को याद रखना। मैं जो उलटा-सीधा कलम की नोक पर आया, नहीं लिखता। आरंभ में ही उद्देश्य लेकर चलता हूँ। वह घटना-चक्र में बदला नहीं जाता।’’
