Mahmoud A. ElSohly, Ph.D.

Research professor, National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR) and Professor of Pharmaceutics, School of Pharmacy, University of Mississippi obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1975 (Pharmacognosy), Masters in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmacognosy) in 1971 and B.Sc. in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1966 from the University of Cairo, School of Pharmacy.

Dr. ElSohly joined the School o Pharmacy, Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1975 and continued to serve the Institute and the school till today.

In 1985 Dr. ElSohly started a private laboratory (ElSohly Labs, Inc. (ELI) ) here in Oxford, MS, which is an analytical laboratory specializing in providing drug testing services, such as testing for drugs of abuse, providing quality control services to the industry and providing standards and internal standards to other laboratories around the country. ELI is also a product development laboratory with a successful track with SBIR and STTR funding. In 2002 ELI received the National Tibbetts Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the SBIR Program.

Dr. ElSohly is board certified by the American Board of Forensic Examiners and the American Board of Forensic Medicine, and ELI is certified by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the College of American Pathologist (CAP) since 1988.

Dr. ElSohly has been active in NIH funding over the years and his current funding is in excess of 1 million dollars/year. He authored or coauthored over 270 peer reviewed publications and over 30 patents in the drug and process development areas.

In 2011 Dr. ElSohly was given the University of Pittsburgh’s Legacy Laureate Award and in 2013 he was the recipient of the University of Mississippi’s Research and Creative Achievement Award and the International Cannabis Research Society (ICRS) Life Achievement Award.
