About this ebook

The appearance of a mysterious teen leads to tragedy on a small fishing island in this “taut, provocative novel . . . [that] crackles with suspense” (Publishers Weekly).

The close-knit residents of Hackett Island have never seen anyone quite like Lani Garver. Everything about this new kid is a mystery: Where does Lani come from? How old is Lani? And most disturbing of all, is Lani a boy or a girl?

Popular Claire McKenzie isn’t up to tormenting Lani with the rest of the high school elite. Instead, she decides to befriend the intriguing outcast. But within days of Lani’s arrival, tragedy strikes, and Claire is left questioning herself, her friendships, and, most interesting of all, the possibility that angels may exist on earth.

“Gripping.”—YM Magazine

“Prejudice, homophobia, friendship, tolerance, individuality, and the possibility that something spiritually bigger than all of us rules this universe are wonderfully woven into this powerfully told story. Outstanding writing, strong characterization, and riveting plot development make this title rise above many recent coming-of-age stories.”—School Library Journal

“The characterizations are superb . . . The hint of supernatural only adds to the appeal. Successfully raising many valid issues, this should appeal to teens from the popular to the marginalized.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Lani’s androgyny and his angelic possibilities are intriguingly played out.”—Booklist

I believe, that in trickle of everyday society, that there are certain things that are meant to slow us down. It is not that you must stop and admire the symbolism that pops up in the form of a bird with a broken wing, or the spilt ice cream of the helpless boy, just that, every once in a while. it is good to stop and recalculate. This particular choice of literature represents that break from society, and the values that should be installed into the routine that we hone like some sort of prized machine. It is a tougher read, with an abundance of crude language, and extremely graphic imagery, but it gets its myriad of points across. Points and themes which, must be grasped by the reader as an individual.

I read this book as a teenager. To this day, it still runs through my head, and I want to read it all over again. It's such a hauntingly beautiful story and so well written.

I read this book for the first time, during one of the hardest times in my young life. It very quickly became one of my all-time favorite books, and 16 years later, it still is!! I would love to meet the author. However, I am currently wheelchair/ bed bound due to cancer. If I'm lucky enough to make it through this and come out stronger and more healthy again, my goal is to become an author myself. It's crazy to me to think that my first REAL dream all came to fruition starting with such a traumatizing time in my life; well, to be honest, this book saved me from myself. Thank you more than you know, Mrs. Carol Plum-Ucci. You are an amazing and inspiring woman. 🙌🏼👏🏼🙏🏼♥️
