About this ebook

It was only supposed to be a one-night stand.

Fox Collins never meant to fall in love with the passing stranger, Melody Waters, and sure didn’t mean to fall into bed. But when she’s gone the next morning, he tells himself it’s for the best. It doesn’t matter that she haunts his dreams and the fire between them burned hotter than anything he’s ever touched before.

Only Melody finds herself new in town, needing a refuge and a home after running for far too long. Not to mention, she needs to find Fox.

Because it seems that the past she fought to run from not only has caught up to her, but the best night of her life had far more consequences than either of them counted on.

While I love the Montgomery Ink World and enjoyed this Whiskey & Lies installment, this book took some twists and turns that were a little hard to follow. Fox and Melody are a great couple that got their beginning over whiskey (obviously) and a one night stand. As usual this generation of the Collins family is fantastic and having the bar/inn as the focal point of the story was good.

I loved this story! It was great to get Fox's story! He loves his family but he feels a little bit like the odd one out for multiple reasons. Melody has just moved to town to open up a dance studio and to try and start her life. She has had a hard few years and is taking the opportunity to move in with her Grandma to help her out and find her place. Fox and Melody had a one night stand a few months prior, before she moved back for good. Neither one was expecting what they found. Fox hasn't been able to stop thinking about her but when they reconnect she isn't looking for something serious, or at all. I loved how the story flowed through the book and we get to see them build a relationship and friendship. They get thrown a few curve balls that have to be dealt with but it also pushes them in the right direction. There's some intrigue in this story. The sex is explicit but not very frequent. It fits both the story and the characters. While there isn't a lot of action, this story does pull in you and hold your attention from beginning to end. Once I started reading it, I didn't want to put it down. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Romances in which the hero and heroine have already met and had relations (in this case a one night stand) are almost always fun to read. Not only was this book fun, though, it had Carrie Ann Ryan's signature brand of closeness and community stamped all over it. I just love how her books renew my faith in humanity. Fox and Melody are basically perfect for each other. Even though Melody has no intention of committing to a relationship now that she's moved to the small-town of Whiskey, her attraction to Fox cannot be denied. They had a one night stand a few months ago and even now her body responds to him in a way that it hasn't for anyone else. Fox is equally enamored with Melody and even before he knew she was Whiskey's newest resident, he thought often of finding her and getting to know her beyond their short encounter. The conflict in this book did feel a little bit muted compared to most Carrie Ann Ryan books that I've read. Fox didn't have a whole lot of tension associated with him at any one time of the book really; he wanted Melody and wanted to "catch up" to where his brothers were in life. He got those things fairly easily and quickly in this book. But beyond that, Fox was fairly set before this book began. He had a career he loved, a family he adored, something was missing, sure, but any sort of pull or conflict just wasn't there for Fox. Melody, on the other hand, had internal and external tension galore. The biggest conflict or tension of the book came from Melody's past coming back to freak her out. On top of her past sneaking up on her, she has just moved to a new town, she's trying to find her place in the community as she opens a dance studio, and she's taking care of her Grandma...whew. Lots of things went on with Melody! As a result, this book felt fairly lopsided. I loved Fox, honestly, I did, but this book felt very, very Melody-heavy. The characters of Whiskey really shined throughout this novel, though. Beyond Fox and Melody, Fox's family (including Dare and Kenzie from book 1 of Whiskey and Lies) and Melody's Grandmother made this book feel cozy and warm. Carrie Ann Ryan writes small-towns that I would actually really enjoy living in and that sense of community makes her books some of the only ones I can reread and reread over and over again. There is a pretty big surprise that pops up on Fox and Melody's journey and that whole element made this book a zillion times better for me since it involved one of my favorite tropes. You'll just need to read the book to find out what it is, though! Have fun reading!
