Gina Moss is single and proud. She's focused on her thriving childminding business, which she runs from her cottage at the edge of The Evergreens: a charming Victorian home to three elderly residents who adore playing with the kids Gina minds. To Gina, they all feel like family.

Then a run-in (literally) with a tall, handsome American stranger gives her the tummy-flutters... Before a tragedy puts her older friends at risk of eviction - and Gina in charge of the battle to save them. The house sale brings her closer to Dexter, one of the owners - and the stranger who set her heart alight.

As the sparks fly between them, Gina carries on fighting for her friends, her home and her business. But can she fight for her chance at love - and win it all, too?

A Patchwork Family was originally published as a four-part serial. This is the complete story in one package.

To be honest I was left underwhelmed with this story and I was really disappointed overall in the story progression, particularly as I usually love me a Cathy Bramley read. It just somehow felt like I knew the plot already and just different character names had been slapped on. Even worse I found our main protagonist, Gina, to be really, really annoying. There was an attempt to make her feel realistic but she was just too"good" for my taste, not enough light and shade to the character and she bacme increasingly more and more cloying. I cannot remember the names of any of the characters - which is never a good sign. All I do remember is that The Evergreens houses two elderly ladies and an elderly man and when the owner (one of the ladies) passes away it becomes apparent that her family just aren't interested in the house and the other two are going to be put out on the street, as is Gina as her cottage belongs to them now too. The most interesting thing for me was the fact that the two old ladies were in a romantic relationship and had been for many years and were now planning to marry. Bit of a sop to modern life in some ways and I am sure this would have shocked some of Ms Bramley's readerhsip and seen as scandalous. Personally I loved the hint of stepping away from a "traditional" male/female romantic relationship. That is all I loved about the book though. The rest of it is either verging on ridiculous (the attempts to block the house sale) or just so much blah, read it before. This review has been a long time coming. I actually read this book between the 5th and 8th May 2020 so my memory is a bit foggy about all the plot lines. Fortunately, I have a notebook where I jot some initial thoughts on the book and an overall ranking so between the book blurb and that I did have a reasonable handle on what I thought at the time of reading.

About the author

Cathy Bramley is a British author of sixteen romance novels, and has sold almost two million copies worldwide. Her books have hit the UK best sellers' list and have been nominated for several awards including the British Book of the Year 2023. Cathy has been a lover of stories since she was a small child and used to beg her mother to take her to the library every week for new books. Many of her passions have come and gone over the years, but her love for story, drama and romance will last a lifetime. Cathy's favourite thing to do is to get comfy with a book in her lap, her dog, Pearl beside her and lose herself in a story. She loves the feel of a paperback, but is equally happy reading on a Kindle or iPad. She also listens to a lot of audiobooks, especially when driving. She reads a wide variety of novels, but there is a special place on her bookshelf for Marian Keyes, Maeve Binchy, Beth O'Leary and Emily Henry. Cathy didn't start writing until 2013, before that she ran a PR and Marketing agency for many years and loved hearing clients talk of how they started their businesses. Those stories must have stayed in her subconscious because she often writes about the sort of companies she used to work with. Her books are about people she would want to be friends with, characters her readers will cheer for. They are often about ordinary women doing extraordinary things. Cathy has two grown up daughters and lives in a small village in countryside in the middle of England. Her house overlooks fields of barley in one direction and horses in the other, and the garden is full of fruit trees: damson; plum; pear and of course, Bramley apples!
