About this ebook

Contrary to popular belief fostered in countless school classrooms the world over, Christopher Columbus did not discover that the earth was round. The idea of a spherical world had been widely accepted in educated circles from as early as the fourth century B.C. Yet, bizarrely, it was not until the supposedly more rational nineteenth century that the notion of a flat earth really took hold. Even more bizarrely, it persists to this day, despite Apollo missions and widely publicized pictures of the decidedly spherical Earth from space.

Based on a range of original sources, Garwood's history of flat-Earth beliefs---from the Babylonians to the present day---raises issues central to the history and philosophy of science, its relationship to religion and the making of human knowledge about the natural world. Flat Earth is the first definitive study of one of history's most notorious and persistent ideas, and it evokes all the intellectual, philosophical, and spiritual turmoil of the modern age. Ranging from ancient Greece, through Victorian England, to modern-day America, this is a story that encompasses religion, science, and pseudoscience, as well as a spectacular array of people and places. Where else could eccentric aristocrats, fundamentalist preachers, and conspiracy theorists appear alongside Copernicus, Newton, and NASA, except in an account of such a legendary misconception?

Thoroughly enjoyable and illuminating, Flat Earth is social and intellectual history at its best.

TO READ OR NOT TO READ This book was a fairly good read. As with many material on this subject, you must keep an open mind about the topic being addressed, and be ready to learn what the author is trying to teach you. The author, in this case, being Christine Garwood. This book mainly focuses on the Flat Earth movement, which started in the 1800s, and accounts skeptics and debunkers who took on this issue. Garwood begins the book with a story about how Christopher Columbus claiming that the world was round actually led to the misconception people now have. This book mainly focused on accounts of different pieces of ancient literature, in which the earth being flat was examined and shown to be true. There weren't that many arguments though. An amazing quote from this text was, “Let this groundless fraud be at length resisted, and let our children no longer be taught that we are spun through the air like cockchafers, at the rate of thousands of miles an hour.”- John Hampden. This quote essentially says that kids should not be taught that they are living on a spinning orb, which is rotating at thousands of miles an hour,in space; when in reality they live on a flat, stationery planet. My one issue with this book was the fact that most of the information provided were statements and observations made by people from centuries ago. Such as Plato and Aristotle, also, Garwood referenced the bible a lot. Not that it’s a problem, but not everyone believes that the writing is the bible can be trusted or is accurate. So my one suggestion would be to use sources that people will have no problem agreeing with. But in the end, this book was very well written, the author stuck by their claim and gave adequate resources to backup statements made. I would recommend it for someone looking to dip their toe into the Flat Earth “pool”.

People are so dense that the first mentioning of a flat earth they turn it away because of the indoctrination they have been seduced too. Cognitive dissonance runs so deep that they automatically turn away from it because of the slumber media has put them into. They literally cant think for themselves at all nor do their own research. They have been handicapped. Dumb downed to the point where all that's left is insults for something they dont understand whatsoever. Even religious people are dumb drowned to the point they criticize the Word of Yahuah and his scriptures but yet say everything of the bible is real. This is a stepping stone that will awaken your mind to the true evils of this world. It is so big to know this truth yet also so small because it allows one to know that most of everything taught is a complete lie because everyone thinks someone figured it out when in fact, it is all theories upon theories. Equation upon equation to where it gets so complicated one gives up and doesnt want to do the math anymore or just assume the one telling the lie is really telling the truth. Open your minds. Realize you are literally looking at a cartoon ball. Dont believe me look at the earth from the NASA website from the first pic all the way to today's. Pay close attention. And if you do. You will see how they have mocked you to your face. This truly is idiocracy the movie because people can not think for themselves

A book with without evidence or facts to support it claims. Besides my favorite one it's flat because. I would rather spend my money on Pokémon go.
