Although there are now proven behavioral and psychological methods of dealing with and alleviating chronic pain, methods that can supplement or replace drug treatments, these are not always applied in clinical practice. This volume in the series, Advances in Psychotherapy -- Evidence-Based Practice, provides psychological and medical therapists (and students) with practical and evidence-based guidance on diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain, and does so in a uniquely "reader-friendly" manner. Beverly J. Field, PhD, is Assistant Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Psychiatry, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri. She is cofounder and director of the STEPP program, a cognitive-behavioral program for patients with chronic pain. In addition to her clinical and teaching responsibilities, she lectures regularly on psychological therapies in multidisciplinary pain management.
Robert A. Swarm, MD, is Associate Professor and Chief, Division of Pain Management in the Department of Anesthesiology, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri. He is also the Director of the Pain Management Fellowship Training Program at Washington University, and Director of the Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University Pain Management Center. His clinical work is exclusively focused on the multidisciplinary management of acute, chronic, and cancer pain.
