Afară de talent, bineînțeles, și de faptul că opera sa este prima fereastră deschisă în Occident asupra unui original aspect al vieții europene – cauze care nu mai au nevoie de nici o dezvoltare – cred că pricina hotărâtoare a succesului lui Istrati e naturalul operei sale, care trebuie să fie foarte prețuit într-o lume atât de cultivată, de rafinată, obișnuită și poate blazată cu o literatură în care viața e de obicei mai mult un material pentru probleme, pentru procedee de artă și pentru stil. Ceea ce în adevăr este deosebit de exotic la Panait Istrati este impresia de adevăr ce o dă opera sa, de lucru trăit, de lucru adevărat. Stilul său clasic, datorat și lipsei de literaturism, se datorește și vieții – care domina de – aproape stilul său, îl presează, nu-i da răgaz să se lățească verbal – vieții intense și pline, care dă acestui stil ceva de metal subțire, dens și elastic.
