Papst Coelestin I. lebte von ca. 376 bis 1. August 432 und war vom 10. September 422 bis zu seinem Tod Bischof von Rom. Coelestin verbrachte seine Amtszeit vor allem mit der Bekämpfung verschiedener als häretisch geltender Ideologien. Er unterstützte die Mission der gallischen Bischöfe, die 429 Germanus von Auxerre nach Britannien schickten, um den Pelagianismus zu bekämpfen, und beauftragte später Palladius als Bischof für die Schotten in Irland und Nordbritannien. Im Jahr 430 hielt er eine Synode in Rom ab, die die offensichtlichen Ansichten des Nestorius verurteilte. Dieser Band beinhaltete seine wichtigsten Briefe.
