Initially, he pursued a career in the British civil service, spending time in South Africa where the vast landscapes and history would heavily influence his later writing. Haggard's novels vividly reflect his interest in archaeology, history, and travel, earning him a reputation as a pioneer of the 'lost world' literary genre. His work is characterized by a narrative style that is both imaginative and engaging, often featuring elements of fantasy and the supernatural.
