The character and the story are as mechanically self contained as its main setting, which seems to be the point. This makes Convience Store Woman a safe and limited story, but a consistent one. Not thought provoking, more thought inviting. To the edge of darkness, where it tips its toes with a friendly deadpan humor of sorts. It reads itself like a convenient piece of literature, which I mean as a compliment. The writing is excellent; goal-oriented, clever and snappy delivery, the character is immediately likeable, the action pushes forward. I felt bummed having to leave the character so abruptly. A short and sweet page-turner, perfect for an afternoon read. High re-read value. (Review is for the english version. Seems perfectly translated.)

One of the most celebrated of the new generation of Japanese writers, Sayaka Murata has won not only the prestigious Akutagawa Prize, but the Gunzo, Noma, and Mishima Yukio Prizes as well. Her story, 'A Clean Marriage', was featured in Granta 127 Japan. She is 38 years old and works part-time in a convenience store.
Ginny Tapley Takemori has translated Ryu Murakami, Miyabe Miyuki, Akiyuki Nosaka, and Kyotaro Nishimura, among others. Her translation of Tomiko Inui's The Secret of the Blue Glass was shortlisted for the Marsh Award.
