Escrito durante su exilio, entre 1304 y 1307, Dante Alighieri aborda la escritura de esta ambiciosa obra, en la que declaraba haber superado su etapa juvenil, por haber encontrado el amor por la Filosofía, narrando su formación filosófica, sapiencial y metalingüística. El objetivo del tratado consiste en brindar un “banquete de sabiduría” a todos los que desconocían el latín, que a finales del siglo XII era la lengua de transmisión del conocimiento y del debate científico, sobre todo en lo relativo a la política, la filosofía y la poesía.

Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), a major Italian poet of the late Middle Ages, has been called the father of the Italian language. His classic masterpiece, The Divine Comedy, is widely considered to be the greatest literary work ever composed in Italian, and his writing has inspired a wide range of artists including sculptor Auguste Rodin, composer Franz Liszt, and numerous authors, such as Geoffrey Chaucer, John Milton, and T.S. Eliot.
