Johnny should use his gun on anyone who doesn't obey or who wishes to do away with us, especially. Because we are the custodians, as they'd also use them on us. We should use our guns be it the traditional ones which are carried or not my fellow brothers and sisters in arms.....like what I am doing now metaphorically speaking, which is to use my brain as a gun which we are also good for against anyone who doesn't obey us. Or who wishes to even do away with us as authors.

Incredible writing... Sure it has a smidge of flawed logic when it comes to anti-war, but it is not wrong. Put all that aside, & you get a beautiful glimpse of a common human being's life and thought process. You forget that all of it is fiction. You forget that this isn't your life that you're reading. Because everyone goes through what Joe Bonham did: love, death, family, betrayal, life. It's relatable to the human experience. And when it captures that, the question of war remains more prominent than ever

Read this book years ago and it's still one of my favorites. The war machine runs on the ideas of courage and glory but somehow manages to avoid talking about the horrors that haunt the heroes "lucky" enough to survive. This book is an exception to that typical war propaganda we see constantly; it really digs into the gore and leaves all the glory to be desired elsewhere. Anyone who aspires to be a soldier should pick up a copy of Johnny Got His Gun - they might reevaluate their aspirations. Excellent read.

About the author

Dalton Trumbo (December 9, 1905 – September 10, 1976) was among the most prolific and important literary figures of his time. One of the famous Hollywood Ten, he refused to testify about his alleged communist affiliations before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947. Blacklisted from the film industry and charged with contempt of Congress, he served an eleven-month prison sentence. Johnny Got His Gun, the most highly acclaimed work of Trumbo’s extraordinary career, won a National Book award (then known as an American Book Sellers Award) in 1939. The idea for the novel came to Trumbo after he learned of a British soldier who was seriously injured during World War I. In 2015 the acclaimed film “Trumbo,” starring Bryan Cranston, spurred renewed interest in the author’s life and works.
