Hij krijgt alles aangereikt: zijn pruik, een prachtig muziekstuk, de leukste verhalen, en nog is hij niet blij. Hij wil een échte hond, eentje die naar hem luistert. Maar welke hond de koningin, minister of componist hem ook cadeau wil doen - poedel, schnauzer of windhond - er is er niet een bij die de koning bevalt. Teleurgesteld gaat hij naar bed. Het wordt stil in het grote paleis. Dan wordt er nog een keer op de deur geklopt en er klinkt vrolijk geblaf
