About this eBook

'Calling all Bridgerton fans! We have your next period drama obsession.' Cosmopolitan

The world is classic Jane Austen. The mystery is vintage P.D. James.

In their six years of marriage, Elizabeth and Darcy have forged a peaceful, happy life for their family at Pemberley, Darcy's impressive estate.
But on the eve of their annual autumn ball, chaos descends. A chaise appears, rocking down the path from Pemberley's wild woodland. As it pulls up, Lydia Wickham - Elizabeth Bennet's younger, unreliable sister - stumbles out screaming that her husband has been murdered.
Plunged into frightening mystery and a lurid murder trial, the lives of Pemberley's owners and servants alike may never be the same . . .
'Dazzling . . . combines the grace of Jane Austen with the pace of a thriller.' Sunday Express
'B rimming with astute appreciation, inventiveness and narrative zest.' Sunday Times
'Takes Pride and Prejudice to places it never dreamed of.' Evening Standard
**Now a major Netflix series starring Matthew Rhys, Anna Maxwell Martin, Jenna Coleman and James Norton**

I thought that P.D. James meets Jane Austen would be a definite winner, but the wonderful idea of a murder mystery novel set at Pemberley ends up as a damp squib. The usually wonderful P.D. James has missed the mark here and written a dull, turgid novel which I had to force myself to continue reading. I also guessed 'whodunnit' long before the end. Very disappointing.

I enjoyed the TV version and found this filled in a lot more. The writing is great and the characters well realised. A light read, but there are some areas of repetition, where characters go over what we've already been told, as if we skipped ahead and are now getting the cliff notes version. Still this is a minor drawback to an otherwise satisfying book.

Really liked this and I couldn't put it down. I read it after seeing the film on television. I wouldn't read it initially because I thought it was going to be like those horrible fan fiction type E-books. What a difference a respectable author makes and there are tie ins with other Austen characters.
