Zwischen 1922 und 1931 schafft die Berliner Künstlerin Hannah Höch eine große Reihe an Fotomontagen, in denen sie sich mit der Repräsentation und Rezeption des Fremden im frühen 20. Jahrhundert auseinandersetzt. In ihren Arbeiten formuliert Höch nicht nur ein kritisches Statement zum Primitivismus und zu den westlich-hegemonialen Sichtweisen ihrer Zeitgenossen, sondern stellt auch eine geradezu postkoloniale Forderung nach einer transkulturellen, globalen Kunst auf. Denise Toussaints ausführliche Betrachtung und Neuinterpretation von Höchs Werken im Lichte postkolonialer Theoriebildung fügt der Wahrnehmung der Dadaistin eine bedeutende Facette hinzu und platziert sie in einem international hochaktuellen Forschungsfeld.

Denise Toussaint (Dr. phil.) promovierte an der Freien Universität Berlin und forscht am Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Centre der University of Johannesburg zu postkolonialer Theorie, Transkulturalität und der Kunst Südafrikas.
