A ghost story can be any work of fiction, or play that deals with ghosts, or simply foregrounds the possibility of ghosts being real or a character's belief in their existence. Ghosts often appear in stories as sentinels or prophets of upcoming events. Beliefs in ghosts appear in every culture in the world, and therefore ghost stories can be transmitted in oral or written form.
