A ghost story can be any work of fiction, or play that deals with ghosts, or simply foregrounds the possibility of ghosts being real or a character's belief in their existence. "Ghosts" can appear on their own or be summoned by magic. Ghosts are often associated with the concept of "haunting", which is the phenomenon of a supernatural entity attached to a certain place, object or person.
Colloquially, the term "ghost story" can refer to any type of scary story. In a narrower sense, ghost stories have been developed into a form of short stories, belonging to the genre of fiction.
Although ghost stories are often explicitly intended to scare readers, they can be written to serve any purpose, from comedy to morality tale. Ghosts often appear in stories as sentinels or prophets of upcoming events. Beliefs in ghosts appear in every culture in the world, and therefore ghost stories can be transmitted in oral or written form.
