The author is one of the best fantasy writers, let alone children's writers that England has ever produced. Strong female characters aplenty. Mysterious plotlines which keep you guessing until they converge in the final act, usually in a heartwarming way. A feminine touch throughout which focuses on emotions rather than meticulous world - creating. Definitely would recommend this whole series to anyone.

I read the first one as a child, but over the last month I re-read it and all the subsequent books. Fantastic books from a fantastic mind.
