"Doors of the Night" is the story of a young man, Billy Kane, who is a lookalike of one of the Kings of the Underworld in Lower Manhattan, "The Rat." Kane gets framed for the murder of his employer, an old friend of his father, and the robbery of a priceless collection of rubies. While on the run, he stumbles on a planned robbery and decides to go where the theft is in progress. He gets identified by the thief as "The Rat" and decides to take that identity while trying to clear himself of the robbery and murder he has been falsely framed for.

Frank L. Packard (1877–1942) was a prolific Canadian author renowned for his contributions to the crime fiction genre. He was born in Montreal, Quebec and educated at McGill University, where he studied engineering. Despite his technical background, Packard's passion for writing took precedence, and he pursued a literary career, gaining fame for his tales of intrigue and suspense. His narratives often delved into the murky underworld of crime, featuring captivating characters and complex plots that resonated with readers of his time.
