प्रस्तुत पुस्तक अवधी भाषा के प्रचलित मुहावरे और लोकोक्तियों का संग्रह है। यह पुस्तक न तो सऌपूर्ण मुहावरों का वृहद्कोश है और न हम ऐसा दावा करते हैं। मुहावरे भाषा की जीवंतता को दरशाते हैं। किसी बात को सही तरीके से बताने के लिए मुहावरे और लोकोक्तियों का सहारा लिया जाता है। प्रायः किसी बात के मर्म को बताने के लिए लऌंबे विवरण के बजाय मुहावरे या लोकोक्तियों के द्वारा सुगमता से और शुद्ध रूप में बताया जा सकता है। मुहावरे समाज की स्थितियाँ भी बताते हैं। मुहावरे और लोकोक्तियों में भेद किया जा सकता है। मुहावरे छोटे और किसी विशेष बात के संदर्भ; दृष्टांत या निष्कर्ष से बने होते है और धीरे-धीरे प्रचलित हो जाते हैं; जिनका उपयोग भाषा में सऌंप्रेषण के साथ-साथ चुटीलापन भी प्रदान करता है। लोकोक्ति किसी पूर्व घटना की उपमा या दृष्टांत होने के साथ-साथ कुछ उपदेश या ज्ञान की बात भी बताती है। मुहावरे आज भी गढे़ जा रहे हैं; जो प्रायः मीडिया व फिल्म के माध्यम से लोगों तक पहुँचते हैं; पर वही मुहावरे जीवित रह पाते हैं; जो लोगों की जबान पर चढ़ जाते हैं।
