About this ebook

What Is Pleiotropy? Definition, History, Mechanisms, Implications, Examples of Diseases etc.

                                      A Concise Review.

Pleiotropy refers to the expression of multiple traits by a single gene.

These expressed traits may or may not be related.

Pleitropy was first noticed by geneticist Gregor Mendel, who is known for his famous studies with pea plants.

The study of pleitropic genes is important to genetics as it helps us to understand how certain traits are linked in genetic diseases.

Pleitropy can be spoken of in various forms:

·   Gene pleiotropy,

·   Developmental pleiotropy,

·   Selectional pleiotropy, and

·   Antagonistic pleiotropy.

Pleiotropy has had an important influence on the fields of physiological and medical genetics as well as on evolutionary biology.

Different approaches to the study of pleiotropy have led to incongruence in the way that it is perceived and discussed among researchers in these fields.

Thus, it is attempted as usual in this E-Booklet to trace the history of “pleiotropy” and to re-evaluate its current place in the field of genetics along with relevant ILLUSTRATIONS for better understanding.

Further, it is attempted to describe few

relevant Pleiotropy Examples precisely to make this Booklet more informative as well as interesting, e.g.

1.         Sickle cell anemia

2.         Albinism

3.         Phenylketonuria (PKU)

4.         Chickens.

5.         Autism and schizophrenia

6.         Marfan syndrome

7.         DNA repair proteins

8.         "Mini-muscle" allele.
