हिंदी गद्य साहित्य को विधिवत् प्रतिष्ठित करने का श्रेय अनेक लेखकों को है। 19वीं शताब्दी का उत्तरार्ध भारतवर्ष के सांस्कृतिक जागरण की दृष्टि से महत्त्वपूर्ण है। देश में शिक्षा कम होने पर भी जनता और समृद्ध वर्ग अंग्रेजी भाषा एवं अंग्रेजीयत से प्रभावित हो रहा था। एक ओर समाज अपनी व्यक्तिगत समस्याओं से जूझ रहा था, वहीं उसे अपनी सामाजिक और सांस्कृतिक चिंता भी परेशान कर रही थी। हिंदी के लेखक अनेक विधाओं में लेखन कर अपनी पत्रिकाओं के माध्यम से समाज में पुनर्जागरण का उद्घोष कर रहे थे। उनका संपूर्ण लेखन सुप्त समाज को चैतन्य बनाने तथा आर्थिक, सामाजिक, राजनैतिक तथा सांस्कृतिक दृष्टि से भारतीय पक्ष को स्थापित करने के लिए था। आधुनिक हिंदी गद्य की पहचान अन्य विधाओं के साथ ही उसकी समृद्ध आलोचना-परंपरा, डायरी, रिपोर्ताज, साक्षात्कार, आत्मकथा तथा साहित्यिक पत्रिकाओं के कारण हुई है। ‘गद्य मंजूषा’ में अनेक ऐसे लेखकों के निबंध संगृहीत हैं, जो अपने राष्ट्रीय चिंतन के कारण विश्वविख्यात हैं। नए और पुराने गद्य लेखकों की एकत्रित उपस्थिति इस संग्रह को संग्रहणीय तथा छात्रोपयोगी बनाती है। हमें पूरा विश्वास है कि यह संग्रह सुधी पाठकों को पसंद आएगा।
