Anna Karénine met en scène la noblesse russe, sur laquelle Tolstoï porte un regard critique. Le personnage d'Anna Karénine aurait été en partie inspiré de Maria Hartung (1832–1919), la fille aînée du poète Alexandre Pouchkine.
