Michael Fried, director de Humanities Center en la Johns Hopkins University, es uno de los críticos e historiadores más relevantes de nuestro tiempo. Entre sus libros destaca la trilogía Absorption and Theatricality. Painting and Beholder in the Age of Diderot (1980), publicado en esta misma colección (El lugar del espectador.?Estética y orígenes de la pintura moderna, 2000), Courbet's realism (1990), que ahora traducimos, y Manet's Modernism (1996), que editaremos próximamente.
