Siegfried saß am Tisch in der Küche und aß missmutig sein Marmeladenbrot. Ein kleines Tässchen stand daneben, in das die Mutter die wenige Milch, die die kleine Ziege am Morgen gegeben hatte, einfüllte. Für sie selbst war nichts mehr übrig geblieben, also hatte sie sich einfach warmes Wasser in ihre Tasse eingegossen. Brot gab es auch nur noch ein kleines Stück, das sie für Siegfried aufhob.
