We are an urban nation and have been so, officially at least, since the early twentieth century. David Goldfield is the Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History at UNC-Charlotte. He has been the Editor for the Journal of Urban History for several years and has authored numerous books, including America Aflame: How the Civil War Created a Nation. Two of his books were nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and he is recognized as one of the leading U.S. scholars on urban history.
