Shape memory alloy is a type of smart material that has huge potential to replace conventional actuators due to its high force to weight ratio. The book also includes other examples of medical devices that have been developed. It is targeted for researchers, technical staff, engineers, and students focusing on devices and wearables.
Ermira Junita Abdullah is an Associate Professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Putra Malaysia (UPM). She received her B.Eng. (Aerospace) from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2001, her M.Sc. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University, USA in 2004 and her Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from RMIT, Australia in 2012. Her current research interests include flight dynamics and control, system design and integration, and shape memory alloy actuators. She has 15 years of experience in designing shape memory alloy actuators for aerospace applications. For her research on shape memory alloy actuators, she has more than 25 publications and 1 patent filed, and has conducted training and design consultations for local and international industry as well as universities. She is a member of IEEE and is an active member of the Circuits and Systems Society (CAS).
Dayang Laila Abdul Majid is an Associate Professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Putra Malaysia (UPM). She received her B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1994, M.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2001 and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2008. Her current research interests include aerospace structures, and composite and shape memory alloys. She has more than 10 years of research experience on shape memory alloy characteristics and behaviour with a focus on composite structures. Her research experiences dealing with shape memory alloy include material and mechanical characterization, development of thermomechanical characterization facilities, dynamic testing facilities for shape memory alloy actuators and design of specific applications using shape memory alloy material. She has published 16 journal papers as senior author, and provided training and consultation work on various topics for local and international industries.
Kittikhun Thongpull received his B.Eng. degree and M.Eng. degree in electrical engineering from Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai, Songkhla, Thailand in 2008 and 2010, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree (Electrical Engineering) from University of Kaiserslautern, Germany in 2015. Since September 2015, he has been a Faculty Member with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Prince of Songkla University. His research interests include embedded systems, IoT, advanced measurement and instrumentation, and robotic applications.
