È la storia del bello e ricco marchese Alberto Alberti e dei suoi amori prima rivolti alla cugina Adele, poi alla sua amica Velleda con la quale si fidanzerà ma che lascerà in favore di un'affascinante contessa per tornare infine ad Adele ed avviarsi verso un finale tragico. Dal punto di vista della tecnica narrativa è sicuramente uno dei romanzi meglio riusciti di Verga, sia nei dialoghi che nella creazione di scene e personaggi. Eros è un'opera nella quale si nasconde il ritratto di una società annoiata che riempie il vuoto delle sue giornate con storie e schermaglie di finte passioni.
