The ECA was established to ensure the supply of essential commodities like food, drugs, and fuel, which are important for the normal life of people. The act also aims to prevent profiteering and illegal dealing in essential commodities. Punishment The ECA provides for punishment for violating its provisions. For example, if a person fails to comply with a direction under the act, they can be imprisoned for a term of at least three months but up to seven years. They may also be liable to a fine. Forfeiture If an order under the ECA is contravened, the property in question can be forfeited to the government. The government can also forfeit any packaging, covering, or receptacle in which the property is found, as well as any vehicle or vessel used to transport the property
