Faisal Tehrani, has written a thoughtful, complex novel about a Malay (therefore Muslim) lesbian struggling with her sexuality since her days at a religious school in one of Malaysia's most conservative states. You know all the "We Need Diverse Books" talk, and all the lip service paid to the idea of wanting more stories from the rest of the world to see the light of day in the Anglophone literary market? This, my friends, THIS is the kind of book you need more of. These are the stories you aren't seeing, because they are not addressed to the West in any way, because they are not written under the powerful glare of the White Gaze, and because they are not coming out of a country that the United States has armed or bombed or fitted out with a puppet government in the last 75 years. But unlike other stories in this category, this one has been translated into English, though the translation is so far unpublished. If we're all very lucky, you may get to read it one day - Preeta Samarasan, the author of Evening is the Whole Day
