About this ebook

Crime and Punishment tells the story of Rodion Raskolnikov, an ex-student who plans to murder a pawnbroker to test his theory of personality. Having accomplished the deed, Raskolnikov struggles with mental anguish while trying to both avoid the consequences and hide his guilt from his friends and family.

Dostoevsky’s original idea for the novel centered on the Marmeladov family and the impact of alcoholism in Russia, but inspired by a double murder in France he decided to rework it around the new character of Raskolnikov. The novel was first serialized in The Russian Messenger over the course of 1866, where it was an instant success. It was published in a single volume in 1867. Presented here is Constance Garnett’s 1914 translation.

Good book, once you understand all the characters, which some have very similar last names. It took me a couple of chapters before I got really into it but once I was in I couldn't stop reading. Some of it's difficult to understand because it was written in the 1800's and it's a Russian boo, with some French words and some German words. Very helpful to have the book read aloud when possible, just for the pronouncing of words/names

what a rollercoaster of emotions, a relatable human tale of tragedy, conscience and redemption. a truly remarkable literary piece that maintained its relevancy for more than a century. I could see why people would make this artwork their favorite, totally relatable story indeed.

I've never been a big reader, but in the last two months I've picked the hobby up and have been enjoying it. This is the second title I chose behind 1984 by Orwell. I'm on my 9th book so far and nothing has compared to Crime and Punishment. I thought the writing and the character development were brilliant. I admit that during the more abstract conversations I was thoroughly confused. The book I suppose is intended to be thought provoking, though. I loved the characters and I found only one to be kind of unidimensional and easy to hate. Seeing all of the other morally ambiguous characters developed so well, leads me to believe that this one character's excessive faults were done on purpose. So F that guy 😹 Ultimately, I consider this book to be the best I've read and I can't wait to forget it so I can read it all over again. I'll choose a different translation next time, though. I hear Pevear and Volokhonsky's translations are some of the best.
