As an early work of MacDonald, not as satisfactory as one might wish. That Lily, Julian and Lilias all die, that Part 5 is a dream, that the drama is not really performable in the theater, all tend to make the modern reader sigh. On the other hand, the plot is plain, the religious intent is clear, and the hope that MacDonald's power as a writer will increase (as indeed it did) is strong as ever.
