Sinds 1988 woont Gerrit Komrij in het Portugese dorpje Vila Pouca da Beira. Vanuit zijn witte landhuis observeert hij sindsdien het dorp en zijn zesentachtig bewoners. Twee oude mannetjes houden een stokkengevecht om een wulpse Spaanse schone. De zwarte dorpspastoor lokt vooral vrouwelijke kerkgangers. Traditionele families werpen hun schaduw. Buurman Antonió vernielt een hek als zijn vrouw blijkt te zijn bevallen van een zwarte baby. Door Komrij s schitterende, precieze beschrijvingen en zijn droogkomische observaties roept Vila Pouca het landleven op in al zijn grootsheid en dreiging. Een hartverwarmend portret van het dorp waar Gerrit Komrij zich het meeste thuis voelt, maar waar hij ook altijd een buitenstaander zal blijven.
