De Verenigde Staten hebben een nieuwe president, en deze kondigt een algehele amnestie af. Hierdoor komen alle bandieten op vrije voeten, zo ook de Daltons. In Awful Gulch openen ze een saloon en gedragen zich overdag als nette ondernemers. 's Nachts echter graven ze een tunnel naar de plaatselijke bank (in tunnels graven zijn ze goed). Helaas voor hen zorgt Lucky Luke ervoor dat de bank steeds weer verhuist. Als de Daltons dan maar de postkoets overvallen worden ze weer voortvluchtig.
