Globalisierung und Utopie sind eng aufeinander bezogen. Erstens setzte die Entstehung der literarischen Utopie im Zeitalter der Entdeckungen (More, Utopia, 1516) eine globale Ausweitung der Perspektive voraus, welche die soziale Phantasie beflügelte und erlaubte, den Vorstellungen einer idealen Gesellschaft einen plausiblen geographischen Ort zuzuweisen. Zweitens wurden die Entwürfe mit der Entfesselung der Globalisierung einerseits naturbezogener (pastorale Utopie), andererseits immer globaler, ja planetarischer. Sie führte zur Vision einer neuen Weltordnung, zuerst in Wells' A Modern Utopia (1905).

Hans Ulrich Seeber (geb. 1940) ist emeritierter Professor für Englische Literatur an der Universität Stuttgart. Er hat zahlreiche Arbeiten zur englischen und amerikanischen Literatur veröffentlicht.
